Portrait of Charles II of Baden (1786-1818), husband of Stéphanie de Beauharnais, Grand Duke of Baden from 1811. He is depicted in a bust, three-quarter length, wearing a blue military uniform with a red collar, decorated with silver epaulettes and wearing the insignia of the Order of Fidelity. Charles II played an important political role during a period of transition in Europe, marked by the Napoleonic Wars and the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. During his reign, the Margraviate of Baden became a modern Grand Duchy. 19th century pastel in good condition (small traces of folds on the jacket), after the portrait by François Gérard.
