Antique Statuette Of The Buddha In Meditation – Laos Or Northern Thailand, 18th–19th Century

Votive statuette representing the Buddha seated in a meditation position, legs crossed in full lotus (padmāsana) and hands placed in dhyāna mudrā, a gesture of spiritual concentration. The serene face, framed by elongated ears, is surmounted by a prominent ushnisha. The monastic robe reveals the right shoulder, following classical iconography. It rests on a circular base in the shape of a blossoming lotus, partially covered with old gilding still visible. Beautiful dark brown patina, traces of deep oxidation. Dense and balanced sculpture, testifying to an old cast. The style of the face, the smooth robe, the double lotus base and the quality of the bronze allow us to attribute this work to the workshops of northern Thailand or Laos, where this type of small votive effigy was made for domestic or monastic use.
