Coming to Paris at a very young age, Carrier Belleuse began an apprenticeship with a chaser in the capital, then worked for the goldsmiths Fauconier and Fannières, encouraged by the sculptor David d'Angers. He entered the École des Beaux Arts and then followed courses at the Petite Ecole and exhibited two bronze medallions at the 1850 Salon, which were a great success.
The following year, he was hired by the English porcelain manufacturer Minton China Work, then returned to France a few years later and achieved immense fame.
