Contenot, Joan Of Arc, H78cm, Signed Bronze, Late 19th-early 20th Century
Artist: Henri Daniel Contenot
Patinated bronze sculpture representing Joan of Arc in armor, brandishing her sword
Sculpture signed Contenot on the base (Henri Daniel)
Joan is a young French woman of peasant origin; in 1429, she claims to have received a visit from saints, who entrusted her with the mission of delivering France from English occupation.
She managed to meet the king of the time, Charles VII, and led the French troops to victory (siege of Orléans, coronation of the king in Reims).
Captured by the Burgundians in 1430, she was sold to the English, and then, following a trial for heresy, she was burned alive. Joan of Arc is one of the patron saints of France, a world-famous personality whose story has inspired numerous works (films and literature, but especially the fields of sculpture and painting)
Good general condition, some wear to the patina (rubbing of the sword, ...), and wear from use (missing tip of the sword, bent spurs, stem of the fleur-de-lis to be restored)
Height to the sword: 78cm
17 x 20cm approx.
Late 19th early 20th century
