Jean Louis Grégoire (1840-1890)
Jean Louis Grégoire , a renowned French academic sculptor , was born in Paris on December 17 , 1840 .
The son of a metal engraver , he was drawn to art from a very young age .
He began his training at the School of Fine-Arts in Paris , where he studied under the sculptor Jules Salmson (1823-1902) .
He exhibited at the Salon of French Artistes , from 1867 to 1890 .
He produced numerous works in the academic style .
He primarily created busts and subjects inspired by classical themes , but also subjects related to the War of 1870 and its aftermath .
He was a member of the Society of French Artists .
Jean Louis Gregoire died in Paris on January 4 , 1890 .
He is buried in "Père-Lachaise" Cemetery , his tomb bears the name "Louis Jean Grégoire" , "Louis" being perhaps his usual first name since he signed "L. Grégoire" .
