"Large Capsule - Reliquary "saint John The Baptist" In Silver, Double-sided, Tyrol 18th Century"
This oval-shaped reliquary is a very beautiful typical example of the popular veneration of the German-speaking Alpine world, notably in the Austrian Tyrol, from the 18th century. The double-sided silver frame (without guarantee hallmark), protected by finely crafted bisotated (domed) glass, contains a refined arrangement of relics and sacred elements. First front view: In the center is a double-sided crystal glass relic in the shape of a coat of arms, housing tiny fragments "ex ossibus" bearing the inscription "Praecurs", a Latin word meaning "precurer", which refers to the relic of Saint John the Baptist, embedded on the other side. Around this central relic: "Praecurs - S.Ioannis Bapt." are arranged several relics identified by handwritten strips in Latin (see photos). Episcopal seals in red wax, attached to the relic of Saint John the Baptist confirming its authenticity. Very good original condition, Baroque period, from the end of the 18th century. Provenance: Private collection in Innsbruck (Tyrol). Innsbruck, the spiritual center of Tyrol, was renowned for the manufacture of such religious objects.
