Large Carved Oak Holy Water Font, St. Louis XV, Black Forest, Brientz, 19th Century
Large wall-mounted holy water font, a finely carved piece (from a single block) in the Louis XV style, featuring acanthus leaves, a shell, flowers, and a cherub… perhaps as a wedding gift or memento, with calligraphic and intertwined initials, and the date 1862 inscribed in a cartouche held by a cherub. The receptacle for holy water is made of brass with mercury gilding, which is in very good condition. Oak was used for the carving. Usually, linden or walnut are preferred, as they are easier to carve because they are less hard, less fibrous, and easier to polish. Oak has the advantage of being rich in tannin, which deters wood-boring insects. The piece is in good condition and demonstrates high-quality workmanship by an experienced and creative craftsman. Shipping available, carefully packaged and reinforced, sent by registered mail with signature confirmation, insurance, and online tracking via tracking number (flat shipping fee applies).
