Christ appears at the foot of the cross supported by two putti, the Virgin of Sorrow appears above her son, her face towards the sky and her arms outstretched.
The whole is carved in high relief on a background of golden sun.
The altar at the foot of the cross recalls a sarcophagus as if to announce the resurrection. The symbolism of this altarpiece element is undoubtedly more complex:
the descent from the cross, the dead Christ, the resurrection, the Holy Spirit, everything seems to be intertwined.
It gives off a strong symbolic and spiritual message that is quite unusual.
Spanish school from the end of the 17th century, installed in the 19th century in an oak frame.
Probably an altarpiece element or even possibly a tabernacle door.
Note the small horizontal piece on the altar recalling the shape of a key.
Beautiful gilding very nicely worked. Collection label on the back.
Good general condition, some small missing parts visible in the photos but really very few, nothing serious.
