- Lithographs somewhat darkened and partly with slight creases, portfolio also dusty and with minor water stains
- Creative New Beginning -
This portfolio is Hans Kuhn's first comprehensive artistic reflection since he lived through a terrible time. The works express the liberation of being able to create art again independently. Created shortly after Kuhn's appointment to the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, the portfolio has a programmatic character for the new beginning of art in Germany. The themes depicted, such as "Earth, Water, Air," "Happiness," and "Musicians," are fundamental.
About the artist
Hans Kuhn studied with Ludwig Meidner in Berlin from 1924 to 1926, and then with Georges Braque and Roger Bissière in Paris until 1929. He lived in Italy from 1929 to 1935, where he befriended Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico, and Werner Gilles. After returning to Berlin in 1936, Kuhn was banned from exhibiting his work after participating in a confiscated exhibition at the Galerie Buchholz. From 1941 to 1945, Kuhn was a soldier and was taken prisoner of war in Italy. He returned to his hometown of Baden-Baden, where Karl Hofer appointed him to the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts in 1948. Kuhn worked there until 1974.
