- The Library Guardian -
Due to its ability to see in the dark, the owl – the companion animal of Athena – has been considered a symbol of wisdom since ancient times. In the darkness of unrecognizability, it is able to see something. Accordingly, it sits tall on the rock with its head slightly turned, gazing into the distance with large, wide-open eyes, where it seems to perceive something. At the same time, however, it has settled down to guard its sphere – the realm of wisdom – which manifests itself in the form of books, which is why the owl is also the guardian of the library.
Her artfully modeled body gives the impression of a dense, fluffed-up plumage, even though the feathers are not depicted in a naturalistic way. But this is precisely what makes the owl, contrasting with the structure of the stone, appear all the more lifelike.
