- Mourning figures -
The contrast to the white background makes the two figures appear deep black. The impenetrable darkness of the standing figure seems unable to absorb any more light. The eyes seem to be extinguished and the face takes on the shape of a skull, while the seated figure seems to be staring ahead. A pictorial reflection on the inner emptiness that remains after the end of the death-bringing reign of terror.
