"Sculpted, Gilded And Polychrome Wooden Light Arm, Dating From The 17th Century. "
Remarkable carved, gilded, and polychrome wooden wall light dating from the 17th century. This type of anthropomorphic wall sculpture depicted an outstretched arm, here with a clenched fist, clad in a heavily pleated baroque sleeve emerging from clouds and enhanced with gilding. It was used to support a torch or candlestick and was intended to be fixed to woodwork, a wall, or a ceremonial setting. The realistically rendered anatomy—particularly the musculature and the discreet presence of a venous network—as well as the quality of execution evoke the high-level artistic productions of the Grand Siècle, intended for both castle interiors and certain religious settings. This arm of light is very directly comparable to a copy kept at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, dated around 1650–1660, in carved and gilded walnut (inv. 2004.170.2.1-2), acquired thanks to the patronage of Michel and Hélène David-Weill. The similarity of the treatment, the style of the handle and the pose confirms the same family of objects. Very good condition with old patina A rare piece, of high quality, at the crossroads of baroque decorative art and aristocratic ceremonial furniture. Dimensions: Length: 53 cm
