Louis XIII period carved and turned walnut small tool
The upper plate shows traces of burnt wood on the surface suggesting prolonged use as a candlestick holder or other. These occasional stands were often positioned in corridors to provide some form of lighting.
The turning work of the spiral is a true masterpiece of craftsmanship:
* A ring and a baluster just below the upper plate,
* 2 juxtaposed twists of different thickness for the rest of the upper part,
* a central knot surrounded by 2 rings,
* and finally a simple twist for the lowest part of the column.
The chosen wood -walnut, dark and often with lighter veins as here, magnifies this delightful little piece of occasional furniture
The stand amusingly bears below a large label from a Bordeaux craftsman whose specialty was precisely this (wood turning), particularly restoration.
However, it doesn't seem to me that this piece had any parts redone or restaured, either for its circular base or for 3 rond feet. If this is really the case, the work is just perfectly executed and invisible !
