Precious works of art combining carved rock crystal, semi-precious stones and enamelled precious metal settings enjoyed immense popularity in the late 19th century. This type of masterful creation drew direct inspiration from the sumptuous cabinets of curiosities (the Kunstkammern) of the European Renaissance and from tribute objects presented to the Chinese imperial court of the Qing dynasty. The elephant, a symbol of strength, wisdom and peace (particularly when carrying a vase or a sacred canopy, forming the traditional ‘Taiping Jixiang’ rebus meaning ‘Peace and Prosperity’), is here enhanced by the purity of rock crystal and the vibrancy of the polychrome cloisonné enamels.

This piece follows in the tradition of the grand ceremonial and display pieces of the late 19th century; it is highly sought after for the rarity of its materials, the exceptional quality of its rock crystal carving and the richness of its enamelled decoration.
