Belonging to a family of porcelain painters at the Manufacture de Sèvres, Jean-François Robert perfected the technique of crystal painting. On March 6, 1838, he obtained a patent for his processes for coloring crystals in vitrified colors. From 1837 to 1855, Jean-François Robert ran the main workshop for decoration on opal half-crystal, until 1843. Then, he became the official decorator for the house of Launay, Hautin & Compagnie. Remarkable for their execution and richness of subject matter, the decorations of Robert's workshop feature abundant, brilliant, and very solid gilding. Characteristic of this workshop are the decorations representing landscapes, animals, and birds associated with plants, or even flowering branches and bouquets of Japanese inspiration. Jean-François Robert's workshop closed in 1855.
