Some traces of handling. stamp Founder of the company "Usaburo Kokeshi", born in Shinto in 1917. Active 1945-80. During the war, he was responsible for turning and shaping metal. He thus invented new processes and styles, introducing techniques using turning machines, and painting combined with intaglio, polishing and stencil drawing. He loved the grain of keyaki and chestnut wood, until then little used, very widespread in his native region. In 1979 he built a new workshop equipped with modern facilities on the current site. Usaburo kokeshi are called "modern kokeshi", different from dento kokeshi (traditional). They are characterized by the absence of conventional forms. The basic models developed by Usaburo feature these helmet cut hair, plump body. Usaburo participated in annual competitions starting in 1961 and won numerous awards. Her name has become synonymous with a type of doll. - About kokeshis: they were toys for little girls, or offered as a token of love or friendship; or symbolized the desire to have a healthy child. They would have a talisman function, are modesty, gentleness. They would also have a Buddhist origin. Their hairstyles evoke the Buddha's bun.
