Master Kishi Sadao 1932 - 1998 - Born in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture.
During his career, he received numerous awards, including the Prime Minister's Prize in 1968 (granting him the title of Master), and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Prize. He is credited with being one of the leading “Sosaku Kokeshi” (contemporary creative kokeshi) artisans. He is one of the few artists who have elevated this craft to the rank of art. He incorporated flowers and subjects related to mothers and children to give shape and decorate the bodies. The flowers contrast with the blond side of the wood.
All his creations have harmonious proportions, and celebrate nature and everyday life.
He is one of the rare artists to have produced dolls with umbrellas. This is a reference to the Umbrella Dance (Musumemikoshi - traditional dance).
-- About kokeshis: they were toys for little girls, or offered as a token of love or friendship; or symbolized the desire to have a healthy child. They would have a talisman function, are modesty, gentleness. They would also have a Buddhist origin. Their hairstyles evoke the Buddha's bun. A note on the artist as well as the history and function of the kokeshis will be attached. This is a vintage doll that may have minor imperfections.
