Landscape of Kabylia, 1920s. Léon Carré was born in 1878 in Granville, Normandy. He first attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes, before moving to Paris and joining the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris under the direction of Léon Bonnat. In 1900, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français and, five years later, at the Salon des Indépendants. In 1902, he undertook his first trip to Algeria. He would make numerous trips back and forth until his final installation in 1909. During this time, he brought back numerous sketches that the State purchased from him in 1905 and which were then exhibited at the Musée du Luxembourg. In 1909, he was awarded the Abd-el-Tif Prize, which allowed him to become a resident of the villa for two years and produce numerous works.
