Édouard François Zier (1856-1924)
Painter and illustrator, received rigorous training from Jean-Léon Gérôme, an emblematic figure of academicism. This apprenticeship deeply marked his work, recognizable by a great precision of detail and a perfectly mastered technique. From 1874 until 1909, Zier regularly participated in the Paris Salon, where he received several awards. Throughout his career, he collaborated with major publications such as Le Courrier Français, L'Illustration, and Le Monde Illustré, demonstrating his ability to adapt his talent to the varied demands of the illustrated press. At the same time, he devoted his art to children's literature, illustrating numerous novels and thus establishing his reputation as a renowned illustrator. Often described as a troubadour painter, Zier distinguished himself in scenes inspired by the Middle Ages and the Renaissance—themes prized by his patrons. This style, imbued with romanticism, is fully expressed in his historical and genre compositions.
