he blade is curved, it measures 21.5 cm, it is the old shape of these sickles. It is pierced at its base with a hole, in which the chain is attached
The chain is old, heavily oxidized, and ends with a weight in the shape of a 4-sided pyramid
The stock is made of hard wood, probably ash, and the hand is protected by an oxidized iron guard, fixed to the stock by iron rivets.
This weapon is rare because it had already become uncommon in the Edo period, and it was rarely collected by travelers of the late 19th century, who did not know its use.
It was used by ninja for its effectiveness against a sword, under minimal bulk. Some groups of monk-soldiers (Yama-Bushi) also used this type of weapon, but its use in the 18th and 19th centuries was not as widespread as in the Muromachi period, when civil wars ravaged the country.
In contemporary times, these weapons, which are part of the group known as "Okinawa weapons", with nunchakus, sai, and other tool-weapons, have been brought back into fashion by Asian cinema, but older models are very rare.
It is reasonable to date this one to the 18th century because of the forging style, or perhaps the beginning of the 19th century, but as with all these objects, a more precise dating is impossible.
The object would have been collected by Jesuit fathers in the 19th century.
