This sculpture won a medal of honor at the Salon of 1865.
Paul Dubois (1827-1905) Son of a notary, he first studied law then attracted by sculpture, entered the École des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1858, he stayed there for a year then spent four years in Italy, notably in Rome and Florence, the Florentine sculpture of the Renaissance will definitively mark his art. He debuted at the Salon of 1857 but it was in 1864 with his Saint John the Baptist Child and 1865 his Florentine Singer that he achieved fame.
This work was very successful and was published in several copies of different dimensions by Ferdinand Barbedienne.
The silver-plated bronze copy was acquired by the State in 1866 and is kept in Paris at the Musée d'Orsay.
