19th Century, Pair Of English Regency Lacquered Wood Chairs
19th Century, Pair of English Regency LacqueredWood Chairs
The pair of chairs was made in the Regency period, around the beginning of the 19th century in England. The wooden structure is entirely lacquered in redtones and decorated in polychrome and gold. The design of the chairs, both inform and decoration, is inspired by Chinese elements. The love for all chinoiserie follows the importationof works of art from China and the East which began to arrive in England inlarge quantities during the reign of William and Mary towards the end of the17th century. The great demand for this type of furniture led to the creationof furniture, such as chairs, screens, drawers, tables, inspired by the lineand decorations of China and Japan. The carved and mixed-grain, moved seat back, as wellas the chinoiserie decoration, are a good expression of the Englishinterpretation of imperial Chinese luxury. The relief figures are obtained byusing cast plaster, which gives a three-dimensional appearance to thedecoration. This proposes a landscape with architecture, trees and figures oforiental taste, painted in gold and different for each chair. A golden thread runs through the rest of the structureof the chairs to embellish them and create some lights. The chairs have seatsin cannetè and legs in a saber. The underside of the seat is again decoratedwith a relief, with floral elements in polychrome lacquer. These chairs, particular and very decorative, areeasily placed, both in pairs or individually, in different environments and canbe combined with antique and modern furniture. One of the two seat has a cannetè to restore.
