Umbria, 12th / 13th century AD.
Made of white marble, this is one of the first testimonies of a very ancient practice, that of building churches over the relics of a Saint, enclosed and sealed inside the Martyrium.
These represented the first stone of construction of the place of worship.
The first and most important element present in the church, precisely because of its religious and spiritual value, is this stone, seal of the place where the relics or remains of the Holy Martyr were kept.
Specifically, this one that we propose represented the closure (“lid”) of the Martyrium.
