In this composition faithful to the spirit of the works of the 15th and 16th centuries, the archangel Gabriel seems literally to leap towards Mary to announce to her that she will give birth to Christ. Contrasting with this momentum, Mary stands, motionless and full of restraint, as if frozen by this incredible apparition. She slightly tilts her head and raises her right hand in a gesture of surprise and then acceptance.
The scene takes place in a very sophisticated architectural setting and, in the center of the composition, we see the Holy Spirit descending from the heavens towards Mary in the form of a dove.
The work is very finely done in tempera in pastel tones and on a cream-colored background with the most beautiful effect. The halos, the wings of the archangel and the vestments are sumptuously enhanced with gold.
The Annunciation, celebrated on March 25, is one of the 12 great feasts of the Orthodox liturgical calendar.
The icon is in very good original condition. Some small cracks and wear from time.
