Patola Or Ceremonial Shawl In Woodblock Printed Cotton - India Gujarat Late 18th Century
18th early 19th centuries India Gujarat for the Indonesian market Rare Patola or Ceremonial Shawl printed on cotton and made in India in Gujarat for the Indonesian market. Wax reserve printing for the indigo blue, then printed on a wooden block for the madder red. Composition with central fields of geometric patterns and stylized borders at the ends. Here the will of the Indians was to imitate by printing the double silk Ikat shawls which were very popular. This shawl which is shorter than the Indian patolas was intended to accompany the dresses of the rich Indonesians or to serve as a banner! No sewing or amputation, unmodified piece complete with two or three micro-patches of consolidation on the reverse. Very good general condition with preserved colors.
