Red Embroidered Wool Felt Reticule, Adrianople - France, Circa 1870
Circa 1870, France. Elegant red embroidered wool felt purse or reticule in the Turqueries style, dating from the Second French Empire. The purse is a four-quarter fold, geometrically shaped piece embroidered with polychrome silk featuring stylized trefoils and blooming roses. It has two-tone cord drawstring closures on all four sides, each ending in a tassel. The top of the purse is notched and perforated, with a pleated green-yellow taffeta ruffle (slight discoloration on the ruffle). The interior is lined with very supple cream calfskin. There are a few tiny moth holes, the only flaw. The purse is in beautiful condition, both in terms of color and preservation. Dimensions: Height 21 cm, circumference 30 cm, drawstring height 15 cm.
