A former chemical engineer, he is a knight of the Legion of Honor, knight of the National Order of Merit and knight of Arts and Letters. He also practices drawing and sculpture. The Monnaie de Paris dedicated a major retrospective to him in 1997 entitled "The Eye and Life".
