Khmer art, Baphuon period, 11th century 12cm high without the base 14cm wide at the arms 6cm thick 17cm with the base Beautiful patina Provenance: old Liège collection Sterile Brahmanic goddess, "daughter of the Himalayas" second wife of Shiva (God of destruction and renewal) Uma is also called "the gracious" as opposed to Durga "the warrior". She represents the wisdom that shows the path to Brahman and is considered the peaceful aspect of Parvati. Mother of Ganesh and Skanda, this goddess was very popular with Khmer artists of Angkor for her elevation in the Hindu hierarchy.
