" Watercolor On The Front And Pencil On The Back By Toulouse-lautrec – Seaside – Circa 1880 – Certificate"
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) Lively Seaside Scene. Rare original watercolor by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, created between 1879 and 1882, from an early sketchbook by the artist. The scene depicts a lively seaside scene, featuring Elsie or Leslie Suermondt and her father, the banker Bartold Suermondt. In the background, a figure appears observing the horizon with binoculars, probably the one Toulouse-Lautrec would refer to several times as "the Admiral," a familiar figure in his circle. On the reverse, the work includes a preparatory pencil study of a lady with a parasol, adding further artistic and historical interest. Technique: Watercolor (recto) / Pencil (verso) Dimensions: 19.5 × 11 cm The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Toulouse-Lautrec Committee, dated July 10, 2019. Provenance: Private collection, Gironde. Other works from this same collection were sold at Christie's between 2021 and 2024. A rare and precious watercolor, reflecting Toulouse-Lautrec's formative period and his already keen observation of modern life and the figures around him.
