Jubako, Japanese Tiered Box, Snowflakes - Japan
Beautiful and large jubako, a picnic lunch box, with several levels. Each level contained a meal for one person. Jubako were used for picnics during the cherry blossom season or for tsukimi (the full moon in September). This unique piece is shaped like a snowflake. The wood is simply polished on the outside, and lacquered red and black for the inside. The edges are highlighted with gold. Some parts of the wood are disjointed but the whole is in good condition. The snowflake is a special symbol because when the winter is cold and snowy, it augurs a good harvest next season. Japan, Meiji era 19th century, 23 x 23 x 21 cm.
