Late 18th Century Papier Mache Box, Painted With A Bacchus

Lovely round box in black lacquered papier-mâché painted on the lid with a Bacchus or a mischievous-looking silenus. The miniature is remarkably fine, the hand is expert, resuming the painting code inspired by the antique, so fashionable under the Directory. The painted decoration is in beautiful original condition, the outer edge of the box shows wear in the black parts (easily restorable).
