A Rare Pair Of Buddhistic Lions Incense Stick Holders - China 18th Century Kangxi Period
Rare pair of stick-holders depicting Buddhist lions, in Sancai enamels. The three puppy can be seen on the one on the left, while two on the one on the right, whose paw rests on a brocade ball, has two small ones hanging from it.
They rest on a rectangular base decorated with flowers in relief.
The ears are removable on both dogs, and the ball on the right-hand dog is also movable. The eyes are also removable.
17th century China
Kangxi period (1661-1722)
Height: 15.8cm
Length at base: 9.3cm
Width at base: 4cm
The condition of this pair is remarkable, considering on the one hand their size and on the other hand the removable character of the ears, and the brocade ball, and the ears. It is nevertheless worth noting a deep crack at the base of the one on the right which seems to be more a firing crack, otherwise apart from wear, no defects are to be noted.
