A Tokyo school ivory okimono, depicting Daruma in a symbolic episode of his life: the crossing of the Yangzi River. Bodhidharma seems to float on the carved ripples of the river standing on a lotus leaf.
He is portrayed with a serene and contemplative expression, showing a thick beard and long eyebrows. In his left hand, he holds an open umbrella, a symbol of protection, while his right hand forms the Om sign. Signed Gyokushū and Toshitaka under the base.
Period: Meiji, late 19th century.
