Rare and large icon of the Archangel Saint Michael of Melkite (Arab-Christian) origin.
It comes from the Middle East and dates from the 19th century.
It is finely made in rich and warm tones on a gilded wooden panel.
Saint Michael is represented as Archistrategus and leader of the "Celestial Militia of the angels of good". Standing in the heavens, he proudly wears his armor and is armed with his fiery saber. He is the Archstrategus who, during the Apocalypse, will definitively defeat Satan and the forces of evil allowing the advent of the new world.
The composition of this icon stands out for its dynamism.
This painting on gold is finely done in rich and warm tones on a wooden panel completely gilded with leaf.
Very good original state of conservation. Some wear of time and small losses visible in the photos.
A label on the back indicates in German that this icon was purchased in Jerusalem in april 1963 and that it comes from the Saint George Monastery located in the Wadi Kelt valley near Jericho.
