Louis XV Commode, Stamped Mondon, 18th Century

Splendid and Large Louis Rare Length of 146 CM. It is in Violet Wood Marquetry in the shape of inlaid Crossbones, and geometric motifs on the sides. It opens on the front with 4 very rounded drawers in 3 rows. Very Rich Ornamentation of Gilded Bronzes. Its Top is a Veined Red Marble surrounded by a Bec de Corbin all around. It rests on slightly arched feet. Quite rare.. The interior of the four drawers is in superb walnut. It measures 146 CM in length, 118 CM on the front. 64 CM Depth and 85 CM Height. MONDON François François Mondon (1694-1770): This 18th century cabinetmaker comes from a family of craftsmen from Dauphiné scattered in different regions of France and abroad. He is the great specialist in chests of drawers in the Regency style. We do not know the date of his accession to mastery, which was undoubtedly in the 1730s. In his workshop on rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, under the brand "La Pie", he created a number of chests of drawers which are reminiscent of often the pot-bellied models called “tomb” and even chests of drawers with straight uprights in the Louis XV spirit. He also delivered some to his fellow cabinetmaker and merchant Pierre Migeon. His stamp, without first name initial, also appears on some Louis on light furniture. Always very conservative in his forms as in his decorations, Mondon mainly uses dark veneers of violet wood or rosewood. Its bronzes, discreet or opulent, are inspired by Louis XV or Regency models. Among its most characteristic models, we note a few chests of drawers with two drawers without crosspieces, the first veneered with violet wood and decorated with a rich decoration of rocaille bronzes, the second inlaid with grids and a reserve of flowers. After his death, his son François Antoine Mondon took over his workshop.
