Anthropomorphic Ritual Whistle

Mexico
Culture Veracruz, 450 – 750 AD.

The character is represented standing, legs apart, arms detached from the body and hands placed on the thighs in an attitude of defiance. He is adorned with a small loincloth as well as a large necklace made using the pastillage technique. The disproportionately sized face has eyes marked with an incision, an eagle's beaked nose and a mouth with a pronounced grin as a sign of defiance. The ears are decorated with large circular tambas (earrings), the top of the skull adorned with a double headband and adorned with a scholarly headdress composed of two large lenticular motifs in its center as well as two quadrangular growths at its ends. Part of the face is decorated with black warrior painting, here bitumen (chapopote) clearly indicating to us the warlike intentions of the character, here being a warrior or a pelota player.
