Engraving ATTACK ON NANTES BY THE VENDÉENS - June 29, 1793, or 11 Messidor Year 1 of the Republic - Ep. LATE 18th century - REVOLUTIONARY After SWEBACH-DESFONTAINES Jacques-François-Joseph (1769 - 1823) - French School. Self-taught painter, sculptor, engraver. He started at the age of 14. He made numerous historical paintings of the French Revolution. In 1800, he obtained the commission for an equestrian portrait of Joséphine Bonaparte. In 1802, he was a painter at the Sèvres porcelain factory. He also did a large number of military subjects. Engraved by BERTHAULT Pierre-Gabriel (1748 - 1819) - French School. Hand watercolored. After easily taking Angers on June 23, 1793, the insurgents from the west decided on a general attack on Nantes, a strategic city allowing the junction with the chouans on the right bank of the Loire. The Great Catholic and Royal Army (40,000 men), commanded by Generalissimo Jacques Cathelineau, is supported by the 10,000 marshals from lower Poitou, commanded by Charette. But the Republican general Canclaux, informed of this attack, had time to prepare the city for the siege and was ready to undergo the assault with his garrison of 12,000 men. Superior in number, but poorly coordinated, the chouans carried out disorderly attacks. The battle turned to their advantage for a moment when Cathelineau himself led an assault at the head of his troops and arrived in sight of the Place de Viarmes. He was then hit by Republican fire and seriously injured. His men retreat, the battle is lost. Only Charette, who was unaware of these events since he fought to the south of the city while the others attacked him to the north, continued to fight until the evening before finally withdrawing. Cathelineau succumbed to his wounds fifteen days later, on July 14, 1793 in Saint-Florent-le-Vieil. It was Maurice d'Elbée who succeeded him as generalissimo of the Catholic and Royal Army.
