Chien Fo Vase, Arita-imari, Japan, Edo Period, 17th/18th Century.
Magnificent porcelain vase with lid, hand painted in cobalt underglaze, enamel and gilding. The lid is decorated with a full-length Fo dog, called komainu or karashishi in Japan. The surfaces of the container and lid are decorated with numerous depictions of these animals amid lush floral ornamentation, including kiku chrysanthemums and fenghuang Asian phoenixes.
Arita-Imari, Japan, Edo era, late 17th/early 18th century.
Height 61 cm, diameter 32 cm.
Very good state of conservation, rubbing of the gilding.
