Japanese Style Gueridon, England, Circa 1860
A Japanese style lacquered table consisting of a circular top adorned with a gold nuagé lacquered decor and with red exotic flowers and scrolled foliage. The top is supported by four gold-and-brown lacquered uprights in form of large stylized acanthuses, constricted in the middle by a tapered ball, and ending with four other reversed legs. Standing on a square gold edged base decorated in the middle of a checkerboard of fine gilded juxtaposed polygons on a brown background. The frieze along this base is decorated with small acanthus leaves, a centering flower and four stylized elephant heads forming the feet of the table.
