A modern and lively technique, the impressionist vigor of the first draft on the cardboard panel of which the painter leaves beautiful reserves which vibrate and enhance the support for this oil by the Marseille artist Horace Richebé. The work is offered in a modern rust patina frame that measures 31.5 cm by 42 cm and 26.5 cm by 36.5 cm for the painting alone. It represents a tartane in the port of Cassis under the Château hill, with the famous Cap Canaille in the background. In excellent condition, the work is signed lower left.

Horace Richebé was born in Algiers where his father was a professor. He studied at the Beaux Arts in Marseille then in Paris in Gérôme's studio. he entered the box for the Prix de Rome in 1901, but he quickly discerned what to take from the School and what to leave. He returned to Marseille in 1902 and built up a large clientele of collectors. He appeared at the Colonial Exhibition of 1907 and at the Salon of French Artists in Paris, of which he became a member in 1907. He obtained an honorable mention in 1907, a third class medal in 1910, then a gold medal in 1924. Curator of Museums and Director of the School of Art in Arles from 1924 to 1941. Skillful handler of serifs" said his contemporaries of him, his work is based on the solid craft of the ancients and has the boldness of the moderns.
