A beautiful seascape depicting tall ships and other vessels anchored in a harbor. The work is by the painter Victor Coste (1844-1923), a marine painter born in Marseille. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in that city. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1883 to 1896 and at the Colonial Exhibition of 1906. This work, painted at sunset, possesses a very soft, ethereal, and calm quality. French School, 19th century, circa 1880. There is a small area of paint loss in the corner, visible in a photograph. Cleaning would be beneficial. Oil on panel, antique gilt and patinated stucco frame, with a few small chips. Frame: 55 cm x 46 cm. Panel: 40 cm x 31.5 cm.
