Pair Of Sheaths In White Marble, Louis XIV Style, Second Half XIXth

Pair of gaiters in white marble, Louis XIV style, adorned with gilt bronze sconces decorated with laurel branches and playing putti. Second half of the 19th century H x W x D = 113 x 32 x 27 cm WHAT WE THINK: ultra decorative for a gallery; the most are the gilded bronzes which for once have not been added. DID YOU KNOW ? The fashion for girdles has been developing since the 16th century. They were brought up to date by Louis XIV who even reopened the quarries of Languedoc (royal red marble). The marble from these quarries was the subject of great interest on the part of King Louis XIV and his architects, who made it a preferred material for his palaces under construction. They are of all materials, stone, marble, stucco, wood, even ceramic. André-Charles Boulle produced beautiful marquetry sheaths during the reign of Louis XIV. They are adorned with florets, large leaves, a blue lapis lazuli background, pewter marquetry surrounded by fringes, scrolls, foliage, moldings and beautiful gilded bronzes.
