French literary critic and writer, Sainte-Beuve is well known for his literary criticism combining biography and work. One of its biggest detractors is none other than Marcel Proust. Sainte-Beuve is also known for having exhausted great writers (Baudelaire, Stendhal and Balzac among others) and praised writers now completely forgotten. During a duel in 1830 Sainte-Beuve exchanged four bullets with the director of the Globe, he made this duel with an umbrella in hand, arguing that he wanted to be killed but not wet. Adorned with vignettes specially drawn by Lucien Mathieu. Good condition.
