PELLEGRIN (Abbot Simon-Joseph) - Spiritual Canticles, on the most important points of religion, Christian morality, and on the fifteen mysteries of the rosary; accompanied by hymns for the principal feasts of the year, and in honor of all the saints. Set to operatic airs, selected vaudevilles, church hymns, and ancient carols, with notation to facilitate singing. Paris, Chez Nicolas Le Clerc, 1728; octavo, 14 unnumbered pages + 474 + II-100 pages + table of contents and 108 pages of musical scores, contemporary full calf binding, spine decorated with five raised bands, marbled edges. Two volumes bound in one. A tear to be repaired between the two volumes (marginal tear without loss of text). The author, born in 1663 and died in 1745, was a French poet, librettist, and playwright. He served as a chaplain on a ship and held the title of abbot throughout his life, but he received a papal dispensation that allowed him to escape stricter religious orders and dedicate himself to the profession of librettist, even working with Jean-Philippe Rameau.
