Célestin-François Nanteuil-Lebœuf, known as Célestin Nanteuil, was a French painter, engraver and lithographer closely related to the Romantic movement in France.
He was born in Rome to French parents who were part of the entourage of Giuseppe Bonaparte. Nanteuil entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1827, where he studied under Eustache-Hyacinthe Langlois, then worked briefly in the studio of Dominique Ingres, of whom he retained only a certain pre-Raphaelism.
In 1830, despite being only seventeen years old, he was classified as an artist and received as such by Victor Hugo, of whom he became close friends.
The best of the production of No. remain the frontispieces and lithographs he performed for the works of the Romantic poets: V. Hugo, Gérard de Nerval, Pétrus Borel. If his name is today linked to the style called Troubadour, Nanteuil was preceded in this field by the brothers Deveria and especially by Alfred and Tony Johannot. Appointed director of the Dijon Academy in 1867, he ended his career by performing popular lithographs of works by Delacroix, Chaplin, Meissonnier.
