David Roberts est né en Ecosse en 1796. Il acquit une respectable réputation d’artiste majeur lorsqu’en 1838 il voyage en Egypte et en Terre Sainte dans le but de peindre les monuments, l’architecture et les habitants. A son retour en Angleterre, ses travaux sont publiés (avec l’aide du lithographe Louis Haghe) en 1845. Cette première série vendue sous réservation a connu un succès immédiat. Roberts est alors admis à l’Académie royale et continue de voyager et de peindre jusqu’à sa mort en 1864.

David Roberts was born in Scotland in 1796. He acquired a respectable reputation as a major artist when in 1838 he traveled to Egypt and the Holy Land with the aim of painting monuments, architecture and inhabitants. On his return to England, his work was published (with the help of the lithographer Louis Haghe) in 1845. This first series sold by reservation was an immediate success. Roberts was then admitted to the Royal Academy and continued to travel and paint until his death in 1864.
