"Young Breton mother and her daughter" Watercolor signed at the top right 22x15cm at sight, 49x39 cm with the frame. There is a similar representation in the Auray chapter of the book "Brittany" published by Menpes in 1905. The artist has represented a "mother and her child" on a neutral background which highlights her subject well. Mortimer Luddington Menpes is a British painter, engraver and illustrator. He began his artistic training at the School of Art in London in 1878 and exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy in 1880. He regularly exhibited paintings and engravings there for the next 20 years. Menpes went to Brittany for the first time in 1880, notably to Pont Aven where he met James Whistler with whom he became friends. They shared a studio in London on their return and Whistler guided the beginnings of Menpes there in engraving and painting. was introduced to Japonism. Menpes became a major figure in the revival of printmaking in England producing many drypoints and etchings. He developed a new technique for reproducing his color watercolors using photography, which was used in works that the painter, a great traveler, published in the early 1900s with the collaboration of his daughter Dorothy (goddaughter of Whistler). on India and Japan, China, the children of the world had a great success as well as that on Brittany. Mortimer Menpes, is an important and recognized artist, member of the Royal Academies and is exhibited in many museums around the world.
