French Revolution, End of the 18th century, Rare color engraving depicting the three martyrs of Liberty: Le Pelletier, Marat and Chalier under the gaze of Liberty on the backdrop of the Bastille and the Pantheon

Revolutionary Period, circa 1793



Color engraving representing as bust figures and from the left to the right the Martyrs of Freedom:

LE PELLETIER with the inscription "Murdered on January 20, 1st year"

J. P MARAT with the inscription "Murdered on July 13, 1st year"

J CHALIER with the inscription "Death in Ville Affranchie "

Above the three figures, The Liberty in a bust figure wearing the Phrygian cap adorned with the cockade, the tricolor scarf on the right shoulder. Inscription "THE LIBERTY" on the base.
At the top of the engraving a square and a radiating plumb line, on the right of the composition the Bastille tower from which emerges a tricolor banner inscribed with the motto "Live Free or Die" and surmounted by a Phrygian cap, on the right of the engraving the tympanum and the columns of the Pantheon.

At the bottom of the engraving, the inscription "MARTIRS OF THE LIBERTY" (sic)

Former André BERNHEIM collection (1877-1961)


Engraving presented in 1966 during the exhibition 'Marat , medicine and the Revolution' at the Goya Museum in Castres
