Pair of vases made using the Totai-shippo technique, i.e. cellular enamel (cloisonné) on a porcelain container previously underglazed with cobalt. Very intricate floral ornaments, painted and glazed. Japan, Seto, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century. Signed on the underside: "Kawamoto Masukichi Zo, Seto". Kawamoto Masukichi (1831-1907) - a famous Seto porcelain maker who exported his wares through the ports of Nagoya and Yokohama. His works were the subject of many European exhibitions in the second half of the 19th century, including the Universal Exhibition in Vienna in 1873, and are today in various European and American museums. Height 26.5cm. Diam. 12.5cm. The state of preservation of one of the vases is very good, the other is good, but has a crack at the spout.
