Beautiful and large Greek Orthodox icon representing the Dormition of the Mother of God (also called Assumption of Mary by the Christian Church of the West).
It dates from the middle of the 18th century, around 1740-1760, and comes from Northern Greece.
The icon is painted in tempera in warm tones and is richly enhanced with gold leaf.
The intensity of the characters' expression brings strength and dynamism to this work.
Very good original condition with a splendid patina. Wear of time and cracks. Losses, due to burning candles, are to be noted at the bottom right of the panel.
The Dormition of the Virgin is celebrated by the Christian churches of the East and West on August 15.
